In the original De Stijl visual language, there is still a compelling allure. In the summer of 2023, I encountered the Berlin Chair (1923) designed by Rietveld, which was named at the Juryfrei Kuntschau interior exhibition in Berlin. The chair encapsulates the universal idea of the De Stijl movement, where various individual parts create a unified whole, "eenheid in veelheid" ("unity in diversity"). The sculptural and enigmatic qualities of the Berlin Chair immediately captivated me. In my research, I came across the book "How to Construct Rietveld’s Furniture," which provides instructions for building Rietveld's furniture. The book embodies the communist and anarchist spirit typical of the De Stijl movement, where design and art are meant to be accessible to all: even though the chair can be purchased new at a high price, it can also be built by oneself. From the book, I selected the Berlin Chair and the Steltman Chair, and decided to construct them before creating my own artworks. This process of making the chairs served as a sort of introduction to the exhibition, allowing me to intimately explore the modernist visual language by physically engaging with every millimeter.
